How Does A Dehumidifier Work?
Dehumidifiers are the best way to deal with excessive moisture in the air of your home.
Extra moisture can cause a lot of problems in your home, like mold and mildew. While most people don't have
allergic reactions to typical mold and mildew growth in small amounts, excessive and prolonged exposure can be
fatal, especially with some forms of mold. it is important to the health and safety of your family to get rid of
anything that can cause these issues, and moisture in the air is one of those things.
Dehumidifiers are specifically made to pull out the moisture in the air from your home.
although it may seem rather simple, there are actually three different types of dehumidifiers: chemical absorbent
and dehumidifying ventilators. each of these two dehumidiers work differently to remove moisture from the
air.
Dehumidifying ventilators are the kind of dehumidifiers that most people are referring to,
and they are the most commonly found ones in stores, for basement use. these dehumidifiers have sensor controls and
a fan. these dehumidifiers can be set to automatically initiate when humidity reaches certain levels. Be sure to
have all your gas lines checked and install carbon monoxide detectors because these dehumidifiers will cause
depressurized conditions.
Chemical absorbent dehumidifiers are best suited for hotter and more humid locations
instead of the cold and humid locations. these dehumidifiers will absorb excess moisture in the air using a
chemical drying substance like silica gel. this substance is on a wheel that is dried by air. the dried air, which
is then hot and damp, is sent outside through duct work that is used just for this purpose. the majo drawback is
that this type of dehumidifier uses a lot more electricity, but is very useful if you use natural gas in your
home.
The final type of dehumidifier is more traditional. when you see home dehumidifiers in the
stores, these are the ones that you find. these types of dehumdifiers have a cold coil, and hot coil, and a fan.
some are manually controlled, while others are digital and fairly automatic. for the manual versions, there is
usually a timer that can be set to turn the dehumidifier on and off. for the digital versions, there are sensors
that will turn the dehumidifiers on and off based upon how humid the air is. the moist air is sucked in by the fan
and is dried by the hot or cold coil, depending on your selection, and then the dry air is sent back to circulate
into the room.
Choosing a dehumidifier can be as simple as picking the one that best suits what you will
be using it for. it can also be as difficult as choosing one based on the size of the room, what you want to spend,
and how easy you want operation to be. there are quite a few things that need to be considered when you are
shopping for dehumidifiers. most importantly, the dehumidifier that you choose should come with an air
filter.
